It hardly seems possible that one of our all-time favourite kid’s shows, Blue Peter, has turned 60 this month.

Most of us can remember growing up with this wonderfully inspiring programme, and many of us can recall the time when Anthea Turner showed us all how to make the FAB Thunderbirds Headquarters, Tracy Island out of cardboard boxes in the mid 1990s

I have got to know the lovely Anthea over the years and she told me recently that one of the highlights of her career was the Tracy Island project on Blue Peter, as it brought so much joy to so many families, and indeed Anthea herself.

Here is Anthea making the Tracy Island model

This was way before computer games like Fortnight took over the World and years before social media, but we are still assured by Mums and Dads and Grandparents that they still get involved with their offspring in home crafts, away from the computer or iPad to give kids a taste of how they can still have fun, in their very own retro world, light years away from the internet.

So for once I would advise DO TRY THIS AT HOME and enter our competition for the most inventive Tracy Island or homemade project of your choice for and you could win a ticket to the Silver Screen Ball at Pinewood Studios and meet Dee Anderson daughter of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson creators of Thunderbirds along with some of the original team behind the classic series.

All you have to do is make your own Tracy Island either free form or following the Blue Peter instructions and send 3 photos of your ‘make’ to and we will select one entry to be our guest on the night.

The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation

The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation

Reading Time: 5 minutes

When Ray Harryhausen died on the 7th May 2013 aged 92 it was time to assess his work, his legacy and of course his vast collection spread over several locations and countries. In the years since his passing The Foundation now has all the materials together for the very first time. Ray kept everything, a hoarder by today’s standards. After more than sixty years of film making, Ray’s collection comprises of more than 50,000 items. Ranging from sketches, finished artwork, armatures, tests footage, photos, negatives, books, bronze models, posters, studio memos, scripts, awards and all the creatures from his films. This the most complete and comprehensive fantasy cinema and animation collections anywhere in the world second only to the Walt Disney Company. Today there is a multimedia archive of film, tape and digital assets from commentary recordings I made with Ray about his films, to lost footage now found and scanned in 4k HD resolution.

Ray Harryhausen’s creatures and films are legendary. The posters for his films are evocative and as this books demonstrates, they are iconic images that have adorned both cinemas and bedroom walls for over half a century. Bringing them together for the first time in a single volume has been an enlightening experience. Many of the posters featured here are from our archive but many are also from collectors young and old from around the world. This has been a collaborative effort and one which has motivated the fan base. When Ray’s films hit cinemas from Mighty Joe Young in 1949 to Clash of the Titans in 1981, film posters had little or no monetary value. Most were simply discarded by cinemas or returned to distributors be recycled. Thanks to the diligence, loyalty and admiration of the cinema going public this book is a definitive account of posters for Ray Harryhausen’s films. Whilst we could not include every single variation we have captured the very essence of these films through their imagery.

The stories behind the collecting of the posters are unique. For me it was sending a hand-written letter to the manager of my local Odeon Cinema in Woolwich south London in 1981 that secured me a landscape quad of Clash of the Titans which is framed in my office today.

For those fans who are familiar with the artwork from cinema and home video releases there is plenty more to see. The evolution of the posters and the campaigns makes this a fascinating read.

Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation to help with the delicate and on-going restoration programme for the creature collection. Richard Holliss’ hard work has unearthed fascinating and rare items years after they had been forgotten or discarded.

We achieved this full picture of Ray’s film posters with the help and support of the fans and Richard Holliss tireless research. Some posters were issued for a short run or as a double feature so would have a limited print run and be much rarer. I am delighted that Richard has written this book. His long association and friendship with Ray Harryhausen makes him the ideal author of this definitive work.

As someone who has been witness to writers in television with my own parents, and now a writer myself, I have spent my entire life learning about what inspires an audience, and even more importantly what keeps them interested.

So with this inside scrutiny and knowledge, you would think that my own belief system when watching TV is extremely limited.  But far from it, and I have been known to binge watch a variety of programmes, and have become lost and involved in them and their characters.

Having been in ‘catch up’ mode over the past few months myself, I am listing below my top four – and so in case you have missed any of them, get some ‘me’ time booked in right now, and get ready to binge.

The most recent is The Night Of, an American crime 8 part drama series, which had me hooked from the outset, and stars the wonderful Riz Ahmed who internalises all of his emotions so beautifully, equal only to Al Pacino in The Godfather, as he turns from college boy to gangster.  John Turturro plays his lawyer, whose skin allergies are almost as painful as the trial, and definitely as desperate.  But the series is without doubt the most compelling I have seen in a while, and will it hold you ‘til you drop.

Big Little Lies is also a favourite, and I have seen this twice, as when I had family over from Tasmania, I insisted that they watch it.  It is produced by Reece Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who also star in the Drama Series, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat.  If you are parents or grandparents, you will get it, and even if you are childless – the suspense will kill you.

The Affair is another incredible ‘must watch’, and stars the fabulous Dominic West who portrays a formerly devoted husband with three young kids, who is sucked into a passionate affair with a local waitress, whilst visiting relatives on a family vacation. Ruth Wilson plays the complex young seductress with every ounce of voluptuous pout she can muster, and it is all offset beautifully against a backdrop of crashing waves and leering locals.  It is a wife and mother’s nightmare, and every young girl’s dream, and you will love those steamy sex scenes.

Grey’s Anatomy is my final choice for now, and I reached the 7th series in just over a month, being hooked on all the dramas of a group of interns in a busy hospital in Seattle.  Their complex love lives are perfect escapism, entwined with their ruthless desire to become successful heart and neuro surgeons, which in my book confirms the fact that hospital dramas are always really successful and a great environment for a television series.  Remember ER, General Hospital, not to mention our own long running dramas Holby City and Casualty.   But that is not to spoil the impact, and Gray’s Anatomy has a DNA of its own, and is not at all predictable with a twist at every turn.

Shetland Series 4

Originally created from award-winning writer Ann Cleeves’ bestselling novels, gripping crime series Shetland returns to find DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) facing murders from the past and present with unsettling similarities in this new single mystery. When Shetlander, Thomas Malone, has his conviction for the murder of teenager Lizzie Kilmuir overturned after 23 years behind bars, Perez must reopen the investigation. Many in the close-knit island community still believe Malone to be guilty, so when his return coincides with the murder of a local journalist, he’s very firmly in the frame. As both cases become increasingly complex, stretching to Norway and into the murky world of far right extremist groups, Perez is pushed to the limit both professionally and personally. He’s as determined as ever not to give up, but, as he closes in on the truth, the investigation will lead him closer to home that he could ever have imagined.

Series one and two are based on bestselling books Red Bones, Raven Black, Dead Water and Blue Lightning. In the third and fourth series, both single original stories, Perez first tackles a conspiracy that takes him back to the Scottish mainland, in a case that will exact a terrible personal toll on both him and his team, and must then face murders from the past and present with unsettling similarities, in an investigation that will lead him closer to home than he could ever have imagined.
