More than a hundred years ago, caravanning was a popular past time of the ‘idle rich’ (mainly men), as a retreat from their gentility to explore the countryside and have fun with their friends – years before Heidi-hi or the less heeled holiday makers made it popular. It also has the heritage of the Hollywood movie star retreat retiring to their caravan on set, which was a favourite place to relax between takes and where a lot of pampering took place.
So it does make sense that caravanning is returning to its roots with its rich and famous clientele making a comeback with the likes of Helen Mirren, Lorraine Kelly and even Will Smith seen holidaying or owning one.
Caravans and Motorhomes are fast becoming the most popular way to holiday as a family break or for the empty nester in search of adventure.
Gone are the days of the overcrowded camp sites and bad amenities, although you can still find a good karaoke or cover band if you want to. Instead we are looking at holiday makers from all walks of life, who are abandoning their five star hotels and hitting the road of discovery in their caravans or motorhomes.
Travelling in a campervan or motorhome can certainly open up a mountain of opportunities, in exploring off the beaten track locations and giving kids the experience of farms and countryside that open their eyes to a multitude of adventures and possibilities.
They get to see where vegetables come from and explore different towns and even countries, with the open road as their compass.
Cooking is a lot easier too and a great deal less expensive than in a hotel or restaurant, and gives you the freedom to cater to everyone’s needs – whether a veggie, suffer from allergies or just enjoy creating new recipes, without having to adhere to restrictive hotel food and timelines.
Caravans and Motorhomes are now fully equipped with heating and highly functioning kitchens and bathrooms, and the majority are completely comfortable and self-sufficient.
It is also the ultimate way to chill, as you gaze up at the stars with your loved ones after a sumptuous meal, glass of wine or a midnight stroll, it will charge your batteries like no other holiday or mini-break and open your mind to discover the great beyond.
