As part of our ‘Discover the UK Challenge’, we come to the stunning medieval town of Rye in East Sussex.

St Mary’s church tower (usually open to the public) offers the best viewpoint to show the terracotta roofs of the many timbered houses. These ancient buildings, cobbled streets and secret passages, once the haunt of smugglers and highwaymen, regularly attract film crews in search of historical settings for period productions.[vc_row parallax=”” parallax_image=”” row_id=”” column_padding=”” full_width_row=”” equal_height=”” full_height=”” vertical_center=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″ bg_video_src_mp4=”” bg_video_src_ogv=”” bg_video_src_webm=”” bg_video_overlay_color=”” mouse_scroll=””][vc_column width=”1/1″ fixed=”” animation=”” full_height=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″][vc_media_grid style=”all” items_per_page=”10″ element_width=”12″ gap=”5″ button_style=”rounded” button_color=”blue” button_size=”md” arrows_design=”none” arrows_position=”inside” arrows_color=”blue” paging_design=”radio_dots” paging_color=”grey” loop=”” autoplay=”-1″ item=”mediaGrid_Default” grid_id=”vc_gid:1458039617457-cbda99f6-b438-6″ include=”14362″][vc_column_text]The sheer concentration of living history packed into this vibrant market town makes it the ideal base for a holiday of discovery, or a relaxing short break. There are many comfortable, welcoming hotels and guest houses and plenty of charming inns and restaurants.

Many authors, musicians, artists and celebrities have made Rye their home and it is visited by millions of people from all over the World who are seduced by its distinctive beauty and ancient architecture.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row parallax=”” parallax_image=”” row_id=”” column_padding=”” full_width_row=”” equal_height=”” full_height=”” vertical_center=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″ bg_video_src_mp4=”” bg_video_src_ogv=”” bg_video_src_webm=”” bg_video_overlay_color=”” mouse_scroll=””][vc_column width=”1/1″ fixed=”” animation=”” full_height=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″][vc_column_text]Talking of seduction, we have been contacted by Frank and Jackie Nolan, whose courtship began on a Romantic Break some twenty or so years ago when visiting Rye.

Jackie recounts their arrival at The Mermaid Inn – they had booked into the Honeymoon Suite, which had been recommended by friends, and frequented by Paul and Linda McCartney and the like.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row parallax=”” parallax_image=”” row_id=”” column_padding=”” full_width_row=”” equal_height=”” full_height=”” vertical_center=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″ bg_video_src_mp4=”” bg_video_src_ogv=”” bg_video_src_webm=”” bg_video_overlay_color=”” mouse_scroll=””][vc_column width=”1/1″ fixed=”” animation=”” full_height=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″][vc_media_grid style=”all” items_per_page=”10″ element_width=”12″ gap=”5″ button_style=”rounded” button_color=”blue” button_size=”md” arrows_design=”none” arrows_position=”inside” arrows_color=”blue” paging_design=”radio_dots” paging_color=”grey” loop=”” autoplay=”-1″ item=”mediaGrid_Default” grid_id=”vc_gid:1458039866287-081c04df-28ea-5″ include=”14363″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row parallax=”” parallax_image=”” row_id=”” column_padding=”” full_width_row=”” equal_height=”” full_height=”” vertical_center=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″ bg_video_src_mp4=”” bg_video_src_ogv=”” bg_video_src_webm=”” bg_video_overlay_color=”” mouse_scroll=””][vc_column width=”1/1″ fixed=”” animation=”” full_height=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″][vc_column_text]As they registered, she recalls that Frank had a flash of conscience being a nice Irish Catholic lad, and told the Receptionist as they signed in that they were not actually married, but were just dating, and did they have a problem with that. As Jackie squirmed over her suitcase, the Receptionist replied ‘I don’t care one way or another’, and handed them their keys. They have laughed about it ever since.

But back to Rye, and it really is a stunning destination, and one that should be visited at least once – and then you will find that once is not enough. Ask Frank and Jackie Nolan – I am sure they will back me up.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row parallax=”” parallax_image=”” row_id=”” column_padding=”” full_width_row=”” equal_height=”” full_height=”” vertical_center=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″ bg_video_src_mp4=”” bg_video_src_ogv=”” bg_video_src_webm=”” bg_video_overlay_color=”” mouse_scroll=””][vc_column width=”1/1″ fixed=”” animation=”” full_height=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″][vc_media_grid style=”all” items_per_page=”10″ element_width=”12″ gap=”5″ button_style=”rounded” button_color=”blue” button_size=”md” arrows_design=”none” arrows_position=”inside” arrows_color=”blue” paging_design=”radio_dots” paging_color=”grey” loop=”” autoplay=”-1″ item=”mediaGrid_Default” grid_id=”vc_gid:1458039932696-5c040b59-293a-6″ include=”14356″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row parallax=”” parallax_image=”” row_id=”” column_padding=”” full_width_row=”” equal_height=”” full_height=”” vertical_center=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″ bg_video_src_mp4=”” bg_video_src_ogv=”” bg_video_src_webm=”” bg_video_overlay_color=”” mouse_scroll=””][vc_column width=”1/1″ fixed=”” animation=”” full_height=”” enable_parallax=”” parallax_speed=”0.5″][vc_column_text]
