Ramsgate international film festival – live-streaming amid global Corona crisis

The popular Ramsgate International Film Festival switches to online live-streaming amid global Corona crisis – June 11-14, 2020

Organisers to bring the best in independent cinema to audiences’ homes as movie theatres remain closed or struggle to draw crowds in most parts of the world

The tragedies of the Coronavirus pandemic have led to public events being cancelled or postponed worldwide. But the 4th edition of one innovative film festival from the UK, the Ramsgate International Film & TV Festival will still be taking place by moving to its own online virtual platform, Ramsgate Digital Cinema.

Festival director Sylvie Bolioli said:

“Our thoughts are with people still in intensive care or slowly recovering and all victims of this terrible disease, as well as their families. Our thoughts are also with all the workers who helped to keep their countries going, in the UK and elsewhere, and particularly those on the frontline who risked their lives to save others.”

“But we also wanted to support the independent film industry and give exposure to a plethora of excellent work from the four corners of the planet and keep cinema alive.”

The line-up and schedule of shortlisted films, documentaries, music videos and web pilots is available on the website www.ramsgatedigitalcinema.co.uk.

Fourteenth Day

The competition will kick in with the World Premiere of a remarkable documentary featuring Sam Waterston, ‘Gatsby in Connecticut: the Untold Story’, directed by Robert  Steven Williams. Nick Broomfield fronts the Jury in the Feature Documentaries section.  The festival’s BAFTA-winning Patron, Brenda Blethyn (currently starring in Kate & Koji, Wednesdays at 8pm on ITV, UK) chooses the appropriately named Brenda Blethyn Special Prize for the Best Film by a First Time Director. Other Jury members comprise Dee Anderson, Jimmy Akingbola, Kenny Doughty, Jerome Blake, Luba Balagova, Lisa Scott Gordon, John Warburton, Mark Valley, Peter Ferris, Bruno Tilley, Julie Forsyth and Tim Clark.

Planted

As usual, screenings at the festival will compete for the coveted Anchor awards – Ramsgate being a town with a strong maritime association – and online viewers will be able to have their say on the films they watch, with eight audience awards being up for grabs.

“The festival has received many hundreds of submissions from all around the world; and although the present circumstances are particular, we are pleased to be able to bring those that are shortlisted to audiences in a slightly different way.”

Using the latest technology, films will be live streaming and will only be accessible once in order to protect the works. So registration at www.ramsgatedigitalcinema.co.uk is essential.

The entire event is free in order to support people financially affected by the corona crisis and give them the opportunity to access quality entertainment. Optional donations will help the Festival carry out its work and ensure its survival.

Webinars by high end industry players will complete the programme. Andy Mayson (Altitude Entertainment) will look at the future of distribution of independent films post-COVID-19. Rebekah Louise Smith will advise filmmakers on the impact of the coronavirus on festival strategy and how to fix it.

This year, we are also launching a new satellite event, the ‘Fight Back International Awards’, in partnership with the organisation ‘Ring of Peace’ with a special competition for ex-servicemen suffering with PTSD and using filmmaking as a way to ‘fight back’ and re-integrate into society. We will have a digital introduction during the festival, with a special screening of a film written and performed by ex-servicemen with PTSD and a webinar hosted by Peter Ferris, who runs ‘Ring of Peace’ and teaches acting/filmmaking to this less-looked out for category of people suffering from mental illness. The purpose of the ‘Fight Back’ Awards, distributed from next year, will be to raise awareness of PTSD and encourage sufferers to find an outlet through cinema.

Donations for this section will go to the Charity ‘Combat Stress’.

For all of the latest news, and to find out more about how to view the live-streamings, keep checking the festival’s website, www.ramsgateiftvfest.org, or on Facebook: RamsgateIFTVFest.

Julie Peasgood Celebrates Date Night with Prosecco

Julie Peasgood Celebrates Date Night with Prosecco

Happily married for the last twenty-two years, my husband Patrick and I started ‘dating’ again about three years ago, because we reckon it’s never too late to spend special time together, as you do on those first special dates.

Date nights – or date days – don’t necessarily need to involve much expenditure – we’ve made trips to Art Galleries (the Winnie the Pooh exhibition at the V&A) or special museums (the Dennis Severs House in Spitalfields) or a meal in a wonderful ancient pub in the centre of Oxford (the secret but iconic Turf Tavern). We take it in turns to surprise each other, but with our dates derailed by Covid-19 we’ve needed to turn the tables.

Actually, forget tables. Tonight we’re having an indoor picnic – and it’s a veritable feast. Prosciutto, quails eggs, guacamole, giant green Nocellara olives, prawns, potato salad, roasted peppers, artichoke hearts and a tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad with my husband Patrick’s home-baked rosemary and walnut soda bread. But what brings it all together and makes it a proper occasion, is the bottle of Prosecco we have chosen to celebrate with.

Feast & Fizz

Perlage Col Di Manza DOCG Valdobbiadene Superiore Prosecco is quite a looker. The cork is covered with a fine cotton cloth, bound tight with raffia and the bottle itself is impressive, with embossed birds circling the glass. From Perlage winery, renowned globally as one of the first Italian Organic Sparkling Wineries, it is the world’s first Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG to be made with biodynamic and organic grapes. It has no added sulphites and is vegan certified. It also tastes like heaven – think fragrant rose garden meets crisp apple orchard, though it’s surprisingly dry, rather than sweet or cloying. With a fine, active mousse bursting with Italian vitality, it’s an elegant, aromatic, fresh and intriguing aperitif that’s in a different league to any Prosecco I’ve ever tasted.

Perlage Col Di Manza

WinesWithStories.com isn’t just an exceptional, artisan wine provider, it’s also very informative. Created by wine importer GreatVine Ltd, their mission is to help people drink better wine by providing a handpicked selection of artisan wineries, where authenticity and provenance is assured above all else. Bona fide, hand-made, single vineyard quality wines (unlike more commercial wines) always have a story.

I had no idea before tasting Perlage Col Di Manza that it’s important to drink Prosecco as fresh as possible. It isn’t designed to age like Champagne as it’s made in steel tanks using a different method known as Charmat. And if it isn’t a ‘Millesimato’ Prosecco as this one is, the producers are not obliged to put the year of vintage on the label, so it’s possible that many of the cheaper Proseccos on the market may be quite old and beyond their best (rather like selling food without an expiry date). Prosecco has a shelf life and ideally shouldn’t be consumed beyond the year of vintage, which is why the suppliers for WinesWithStories.com bottle it fresh from the tank for every shipment.

Cheers!

In a nutshell, the less time Prosecco spends in the bottle, the better – but when it tastes this good (and produces no hangover!) there isn’t much danger of it lying around for long…

What’s In Your Make-Up Bag? – Julie Peasgood Reveals All

What’s In Your Make-Up Bag? – Julie Peasgood Reveals All

Julie May Peasgood is an actress, television presenter, author and voice over artist known. Julie is best known for her role as Fran Pearson in the television soap Brookside but has appeared in numerous movies, TV series and Theatre Productions.

Julie Peasgood

Julie shares the secrets of her makeup bag and some of her very special beauty tips.

‘My actual make-up bag is a treasured one from the Outer Hebrides (one of my favorite places on earth) and I bought it from the Harris Tweed shop in Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.

Julie’s treasured Harris Tweed bag

I don’t wear foundation, I just use a tinted moisturizer, but I’m currently going nuts as for the first time since I started using Clarins tinted moisturizer (over 35 years ago now!) they have withdrawn it from sales to re-assess its UV ratings. I do have an ancient tube in an extremely dark shade that I found loitering in the back of a cupboard, but I look like I’ve been Tango’ed if I wear it, which is not ideal.

I’m listing the items in the order I wear them, so next up is my fave item in the world, and the one that’s the most indispensable to me. It’s ANCIENT (have NOT included pic as too ashamed) but Max Factor’s dark shadow concealer is the best I have ever used – which is why I apply it with a fabulous Flormar retractable brush, to eke out the remnants for another few years. (Flormar is a really good, incredibly reasonable brand that I found in Gibraltar on my travels, but I think it’s sold on Amazon).

Versatile Number 7 mirror

I don’t like a shiny face, so I use Max Factor’s Pressed Powder Crème Puff in Translucent – it doesn’t cake and smells nice.

Blusher is a Bourjois one, in Rose Ambre shade – it’s a powder blusher (don’t like cream ones) and comes with its own little brush – again I have used this brand for years (am very faithful when I find things I love!)

My current mascara is also Bourjois – It’s Volume Glamour in black and I like it because it doesn’t clump or smudge. I don’t often wear eye shadow, but if I do for an evening out, or for presenting on TV, then I use a Chanel palette of different shades of brown.

Something I do always wear (because it seems to make a huge difference to eye definition) is a dark brown eyeliner pencil – but I only use it under my eyes next to my lashes, never on the upper lid.

I don’t wear lipstick very much, but if I do, I choose a soft shade of pink, and the one I have in my make-up bag at the mo is a Flormar one.

Lip Smacking

The other things that are my makeup bag staples are a couple of pairs of tweezers, dental floss and a breath freshener spray, a tiny pot of Vaseline, some manicure scissors, a small round mirror and a small round No 7 magnifying mirror – invaluable!
