Who would have predicted that a sleepy seaside town situated on our low key Kent coast, would burst into life and host an international film festival, the likes of Cannes and California would be proud to present.
In these extraordinary times, the first Ramsgate Film Festival is taking place on 24-26 March –an equally amazing lady, Sylvie Bolioli is at the helm.

Sylvie was brought up in Menton in the South of France, and fell in love with Ramsgate after studying in the UK at Nottingham University and living and working in London, as it reminded her in so many ways of her home town with the friendliness of the people and as she discovered other like-minded creatives in the area.
Sylvie is half French and half Italian, and started acting as a child when she belonged to a Youth Theatre group called ‘Le Jeune Theatre du Soleil’ which toured in the South of France.
Sylvie has a genuine passion for film, which is evident as she has worked both as an actress and a director, even directing the legendary Scorsese in a clip to be shown at the Oscars.
Sylvie also directed a short film called ‘GAS’, based on a story by Alfred Hitchcock written in 1919 before he became a film director and licensed by the Hitchcock Estate, with Johanna Mohs, Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) and Valerie Leon (Bond, Hammer, Carry On).

She is a big Hitchcock fan and loves the Hollywood film noir of the 40s and 50s and Hollywood 40s and 50s in general.
She then made a feature documentary called “Law & Disorder: the Insanity Defense’ about the criminal responsibility of the mentally ill.

It takes bravery to face your own demons and that is what Sylvie has done in the making of this film, as she too has suffered with depression in the past, as have so many artistic people throughout history. It is this very component or strength that has enabled her to pioneer such a groundbreaking event as The Ramsgate Film and Television Festival.
Another reason for Sylvie moving to Ramsgate, was to own a dog, and he is the Festival’s mascot. Sylvie says ‘I am an animal lover. I have a dog and a cat. I also try to rescue animals and I looked after birds. Not always easy to save them when they’re injured or fallen from the nest. But I do my best’.

Sylvie has recently acted in a film called ‘Leave Now’ by Stephen Frost, entirely shot in the area of Ramsgate. It will open the Festival, but not be part of the competition.

As film makers and artists are booking their flights and tickets from all over the globe to attend the festival, we spoke to a colleague of Sylvie PR guru Ricky Barnett, who is blown away by her passion for the event, and predicts that it will be the first of many film festivals to be held in Ramsgate, and that next year will see even more famous filmsmakers and faces.
Check out the itinerary already available, we will see you there.

Dating websites are now becoming the most popular way of meeting a partner. Gone are the days when your eyes would meet up with someone over a crowded room at a party or social gathering, and then stumble awkwardly over your words whilst checking out the other with symbolic body language and banter.
It is of course very difficult to clamp eyes on someone whilst you or they are checking out the latest news or emails on their iphone.

So where has the spontaneity of dating gone? We all know the answer to that, as it is the dating website of course.
Tinder was recently described to me by a fellow worker as a ‘shag fest’, as he unashamedly told me he had become obsessed with meeting women through the website, and most meetings had culminated in a one or two night stand at best, mostly instigated by him.
With a bit more exploration and questioning he then revealed that he had recently met two or three ladies who had ticked all the boxes but that he now had the freedom to check out more and so hadn’t settled for one – yet! Well at least he had an ultimate goal – although it didn’t seem to be in a hurry to find ‘the one’. Spoilt for choice springs to mind!

Another female friend met her life partner through the Guardian dating website, and said it would have been hard to find someone with the same interests in this day and age. She is mid forties, a writer and a reader, living in South London. She enjoys walks and trips to the theatre, a bit of an intellectual and not really a social butterfly so found this to be a great way of linking up with someone. She had met her partner on a third date.

Many same sex partnerships have also been formed in this way of course, and it eliminates the painful process of meeting up in vulnerable venues if they require a more private approach.

I personally respect the ethos of online dating, but feel that there is nothing like the spine tingling, tummy churning excitement of connecting with someone for the first time in the flesh, and the ultimate challenge of taking the attraction to the next stage.

It is that time of the week again, yay it’s Friday and time for our recipe of the week.
Tasty but simple with a twist of flavour with the chili sauce. Quick and easy to prepare, and can be served as an appetiser or a main course. Nice to warm you up because we still have a way to go for the warm weather even though Spring is on the horizon.

INGREDIENTS
4 Medium Cod Fillets
4 tbsp Sweet Chilli Sauce
1 Chicken Stock Cube
75g Green Beans, Trimmed and Cut into Pieces
4 Spring Onions, Sliced
1 Red Chilli, Trimmed and Sliced
125g Baby Corn, Halved
1 Whole Garlic, Minced
Salt and Pepper
200g Wide Rice Noodles
75g Baby Spinach, Shredded
Good Handful Coriander, Coarsely Chopped
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 200ºC.
Place Cod on a baking tray and drizzle over 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce.
Bake for 15 minutes.
Dissolve the stock cube in 600ml boiling water in a medium sized saucepan.
Place the pan over a medium heat and bring to a boil.
Add the beans, corn and chilli, return to the boil and cook for one minute.
Now add the garlic, salt & pepper.
Return to a boil and the remove immediately from the heat.
Add the noodles, shredded spinach and coriander.
Stir until everything is immersed, then cover and leave for five minutes.
Scoop the noodles and remaining liquid into two bowls.
Top each with a fillet of fish, scatter over the remaining coriander and serve with a lime wedge.
Serve & enjoy.
