It seems that very few people can describe this powerful emotion of love. As Prince Charles famously said at his engagement to Lady Di when asked if they were in love ‘whatever love is’.
The truth was he knew exactly what love was – but was forbidden to say it as he was in love with someone else at the time, and later on rocked a nation and almost the monarchy to be with the woman he loved.
This was not the first time a similar event had occurred within our Royal Family. Indeed our very own King Edward VIII had fallen for Wallis Simpson who had been married twice, and as a result abdicated because of Royal protocol, even with the support and sympathy of the Nation behind him. But he ended his years with the woman he loved in exile in France.
Millions of people across the world fall in love every day, and yet we cannot see or touch ‘love’ which is extraordinary because it can make us go weak at the knees, perspire, lose our appetite or even our mind.
So what is this crazy little thing called love?
A very close friend of mine fell in love but it was unrequited and the affects were overwhelming. She was a dancer and when she went on tour to Germany, the emotional experience affected her so much that she completely lost her appetite for days, ending up in a hospital in Berlin. They ran a series of tests and could find nothing wrong with her – until a young sensitive doctor sat on her bed and asked her the million dollar question. Are you in love? Anna burst into tears and confessed that this was indeed the condition that was making her ill. But it was this realisation and the kind words of the young doctor that helped her to heal.
There is of course the love that we feel for a parent or offspring, or for even a pet. But I am talking about when you meet someone of that magically turns your life upside down, so that you have difficulty breathing.
The majority of us have experienced being ‘in love’ at some point or times in our life, sometimes the intensity of the feeling is so overwhelming that it will eclipse any other emotion. Sometimes it is appropriately placed, as with a young couple who intend to spend the rest of their lives together, and sometimes sustaining the feeling over a lifetime is another challenge.
But we are talking about now, and the intensity of love itself when it strikes. It is not surprising that most music, movies and poems are written about love, and so why is love so powerful, and why are we given this emotion which is in the end the most important thing of all.

My friend Katie has always had a lot more dosh than me. Her parents were from old money which was evident when we were at school together and she went on to a high powered and highly paid career in advertising and ended up marrying an extremely wealthy man.
So what has this to do with Christmas you are asking. Well, over the years Katie and I have exchanged Christmas gifts, and I was always struggling to keep up with her fabulous presents of Tiffany bracelets or extravagant hampers, and had to start saving all year to get anywhere close to her gifts.
But it is only in recent years that we decided to come clean and stop the pressure all round, as she was running out of ideas for me as a creative struggling writer, and I out of cash to buy someone who had everything.
We took a tip from the Archbishop of Canterbury, although Katie is definitely not religious, and decided to donate any present money to a charity of our choice instead of indulging each other, and got a lot more fun and satisfaction as a result.
We discovered there are a number of charities who have gift cards for the festive season, and as charity is not just for Christmas, we went on to make a donation all year round. Perhaps this could also help you to decide which Charity is close to your heart for you to make an ongoing donation however small.
If you are on a super saver budget this year, there are some last minute tips and ideas for you to save money.
This is the last week for online ordering if you don’t want to pay over the odds for delivery, as this can add a lot onto your bill. There are also a number of super saver delivery websites which search for ways of getting you free or low payment orders and deliveries.
Check out www.moneysavingexpert.com which is a great website to check out offers across the board, and Martin Lewis of breakfast TV offers some sound advice on saving money in all areas of spending.
If you have left it late to buy your Christmas decorations House of Fraser are offering all of theirs half price, so you have made a good decision to delay this purchase. One thing for sure, this is money well spent as you can use them year after year.
Some stores have already begun their half price Christmas sale, for instance ASOS, Kurt Geiger and Miss Selfridge are a good place to begin looking for those early bargains and you will miss the Christmas rush as a result, both online and in the shops.
So give yourself a break and pull back on your spending, so that the New Year can really get off to a great start, and you may even be able to treat yourself with the money you have saved.

We all take fashion for granted, whether or not we follow the trend of the fast changing look of the moment.
You may not want to follow fashion but be a lover of a classic look, as simple as cashmere or the little black dress. But whatever you wear, it has been set as a trend by a movie star or icon over the past century.
Katherine Hepburn for instance was famous for her snubbing of the Hollywood system, which was already in place when she was offered her first movie contract, refusing to conform to the glitz and the glam, but assuming her very own style of little makeup and plain classic appearance. She of course became one of the most revered icons in Hollywood.
Marilyn Monroe on the other hand went full on glittering movie star in every sense, but still managed to come out as a revered Hollywood legends, celebrated today as one of the sexiest women to adorn the walk of fame.
It may seem strange but the legendary puppet Lady Penelope set the trend with her haut couture fashion and pink girl power. Our very own Sylvia Anderson created both the puppet and the imagery around her. She based the concept on the Scarlett Pimpernel but wanted to make the hero a female, way ahead of her time. Lady P is still among the most popular personalities in television.
Madonna in more recent years has influenced generations with her bold colours and revealing lines, with full on rock and roll chic. She took no prisoners in the eighties with her teasing lyrics and evocative moves informed women they had a right to be seen and heard – as well as sexy.
Lady Gaga may be famous for her raw meat dress, but her fashions are brave and inspiring, in line with her music. She comes out for the abused and under privileged, which matches her plucky attires. She is not to be messed with and neither is her look.
So we all take our inspiration from one icon or another, but the question we need to ask is, ’who am I as a person and what am I wanting to present to the World? You may be restricted by your profession or lifestyle, but in your down time what sort of individual do you want to portray?
I recently met the Head of a Corporate Finance Company. I expected him to be suited and booted, but he had great pride in revealing his tattoos and piercings under his white shirt and tie. ‘It is my brand’ he exclaimed and went on to say he encouraged each member of his staff to find their own identity, even if not as extreme. I was thrilled and humbled, and extremely grateful that I had the privilege of meeting such an inspiring individual in such an unlikely environment. It certainly gave me food for thought, and dented my stereotype imagery of the corporate world of finance.
