The Academy Awards, or “Oscars”, is an annual American awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to pay homage to the best productions to emerge out of the United States movie industry.
The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, which has become commonly known by its nickname “Oscar.” The awards, first presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, are overseen by AMPAS.
The awards ceremony was first broadcast to radio in 1930 and televised for first time in 1953. It is now seen live in more than 200 countries and can be streamed live online. The Oscars is the oldest entertainment awards ceremony; its equivalents, the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music and recording, are modeled after the Academy Awards.
Well, this is how it is described on Wikipedia – but reading between the lines as we celebrate the 89th Oscar award ceremony this year, there are a lot more layers to the ceremony which have emerged over the past decades.
Top designers have seized an opportunity to present their most valued creations before an international audience desperate to emulate the Hollywood elite.
So let’s look back at some of the fashions that have donned the red carpet and the stars they have adorned.

Ruth Wilson first caught my attention as the dangerously manipulative Alice Morgan in the psychological cop series Luther with Idris Elba
and then again as she played the relentlessly seductive Alison Bailey in the much acclaimed drama series The Affair.
Ruth has also appeared in a number of high profile roles and productions ranging from Jane Eyre to Saving Mr Banks. Ruth herself admits that she is drawn to damaged complicated characters and it is evident that she is unusually comfortable in ‘outing’ her inner demons.
Ruth Wilson is already a legend, which is evident as she performs one of the most sought after female leading roles at the National Theatre, Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen.
The play was written in 1891 by Ibsen and tells the story of a woman’s quest to sacrifice the lives of three men to achieve her ultimate goal. A modern day Lady Macbeth, with all of the facets of her character unravelled against a backdrop of emotion and ultimate tragedy.
Ruth digs deep to reveal the harsh reality of her unscrupulous world in her portrayal of the character, and brings a myriad of emotions so rarely experienced in theatre today.
All reviews have been magnificent with ‘performance of the year’ from The Telegraph and the Guardian saying ‘I have never seen an actor make so convincing the character’s toxic aestheticism’.
If you cannot make it to the National Theatre, then you will have the opportunity to see a live performance on the 9 March as it is transmitted at 650 cinemas across the UK.

After 18 long months I am almost at my ideal weight, following a regime of exercise and healthy eating.
I followed a friend’s advice to sign up to Slimming World www.slimmingworld.co.uk, and was then motivated by a Glotime fitness coach and some of their low fat recipes on Mama’s Kitchen, https://www.glotime.tv/category/mamas-kitchen/ and the rest is history.
At the start of my journey my partner and I agreed to embark on this regime together, which helped me to stay focused. I vowed to resist buying any additions to my wardrobe until I reached my goal – and it was hard as I missed endless months of retail therapy. It is an occupation I absolutely adore – although it has become a bit of a joke in my family, because as much as I love it, my partner loathes shopping with a passion! But he came up with the ideal solution, an idea I grabbed with both hands.
I had heard about ‘Personal Stylists’ from a couple of my girlfriends who always enjoy buying clothes – empty nesters who had the time and money for a bit of self indulgence.
So for me, I had considered this to be a rather expensive and un-necessary way of shopping. But when my partner offered me a big birthday present of an opportunity of a spa day in London followed by an overnight in a hotel and a ‘Personal Stylist’ experience in Debenhams the next day – who was I to turn it down.
My partner had got the idea from a colleague at work who has sight problems. She had utilised the ‘Personal Stylist’ to buy an outfit for her daughter’s Wedding, as they are fully trained to help with all disabilities and they have also been trained with help from the RNIB. But for me it was recommendation enough to find out for myself.
As we met with the ‘Personal Stylist’ called Emily she greeted us with a smile and directed us to a private suite, where magazines and free drinks were on offer.
We discussed styles and colours, and Emily sourced a rail of beautiful clothes and shoes, which I tried on. It was really uplifting as some of the selections were designs I had not even considered. But the majority of them worked, and I felt like I had my very own Gok Wan.
The entire experience lasted for well over an hour, and I left for home feeling elated, and with a completely new wardrobe. My partner was pretty chilled out too, which was a first considering he always hated shopping!
I am now a serious ‘Personal Shopper’ convert, an experience that I would now completely recommend.
