Follow Your Star and be a Dedicated Follower of Fashion

Follow Your Star and be a Dedicated Follower of Fashion

We all take fashion for granted, whether or not we follow the trend of the fast changing look of the moment.

You may not want to follow fashion but be a lover of a classic look, as simple as cashmere or the little black dress. But whatever you wear, it has been set as a trend by a movie star or icon over the past century.

Katherine Hepburn for instance was famous for her snubbing of the Hollywood system, which was already in place when she was offered her first movie contract, refusing to conform to the glitz and the glam, but assuming her very own style of little makeup and plain classic appearance. She of course became one of the most revered icons in Hollywood.

Marilyn Monroe on the other hand went full on glittering movie star in every sense, but still managed to come out as a revered Hollywood legends, celebrated today as one of the sexiest women to adorn the walk of fame.

It may seem strange but the legendary puppet Lady Penelope set the trend with her haut couture fashion and pink girl power. Our very own Sylvia Anderson created both the puppet and the imagery around her. She based the concept on the Scarlett Pimpernel but wanted to make the hero a female, way ahead of her time. Lady P is still among the most popular personalities in television.

Madonna in more recent years has influenced generations with her bold colours and revealing lines, with full on rock and roll chic. She took no prisoners in the eighties with her teasing lyrics and evocative moves informed women they had a right to be seen and heard – as well as sexy.

Lady Gaga may be famous for her raw meat dress, but her fashions are brave and inspiring, in line with her music. She comes out for the abused and under privileged, which matches her plucky attires.   She is not to be messed with and neither is her look.

So we all take our inspiration from one icon or another, but the question we need to ask is, ’who am I as a person and what am I wanting to present to the World? You may be restricted by your profession or lifestyle, but in your down time what sort of individual do you want to portray?

I recently met the Head of a Corporate Finance Company. I expected him to be suited and booted, but he had great pride in revealing his tattoos and piercings under his white shirt and tie. ‘It is my brand’ he exclaimed and went on to say he encouraged each member of his staff to find their own identity, even if not as extreme. I was thrilled and humbled, and extremely grateful that I had the privilege of meeting such an inspiring individual in such an unlikely environment. It certainly gave me food for thought, and dented my stereotype imagery of the corporate world of finance.

Milly Goes to Boot Camp – And We All Come Out Smiling

Milly Goes to Boot Camp – And We All Come Out Smiling

For those of you who have been following the adventures of Milly, my Golden Labrador puppy, I have another update.

As you know, Milly came to me when she was less than two months old, and I have been through all the teething problems (literally of a young puppy). As with any ‘baby’ it does not matter how prepped you are with the wise advise of those who have been there before, nothing can really prepare you for the emotional roller coaster and practical procedures of owning such an intelligent and wily animal.

Milly is now five months old, and through necessity rather than planning, I have sought the hands on advise of the doggie experts and embarked on a rather intensive but satisfying course of dog training.

It is all sounding rather militant, but believe me this has turned our lives around and Milly has evolved from young boisterous puppy into a rather sensible young lovable pet.

Milly has always been affectionate, but rather than knocking over the kids and wrecking the kitchen in one excitable swoop, she is now relatively calm and snuggles up on the settee with us at night and even sleeps until 7am without stirring.

You have to remember that Labradors particularly go through really bad chewing phases as their teeth come in around about four to five months and then again at a year. But this can be alleviated if you are prepared by investing in some suitably good toys and feeding them food in “Kongs”, where they cut their teeth and are kept occupied for hours if you pack them properly.

These phases are particularly significant for dogs being dumped or taken into rescue homes, as the owners are unprepared and unable to cope. So it is best to know what is to come.

You will find a lot of good training courses near to you, just check out your nearest through The Kennel Club. It will really make a difference to your life and that of your pet. All animals respond well to discipline, similar to children, it makes them feel safe and contained, and in this case will enable you to sleep easy and get on with your life.

Don’t be averse to crate training too, as it sounded very severe to me when I was first recommended to buy a ‘cage’ but again it has made a huge difference, just to allow Milly to chill out sometimes, or to give me a chance to get on with some chores around the house without being pounced upon with excitement.

But for all these hurdles, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel as Labradors and most doggie breeds are known to be the most loving, loyal and affectionate animals on the Planet if treated with respect and disciplined in the correct way.   So keep on track and once you have come through the testing puppy trials and tribulations, you will really have a friend for life.

Stay tuned for more ‘Pupdates’

Share your puppy stories with us – we would love to hear them with #GloTime on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

A Shed for the “She Devil”

A Shed for the “She Devil”

It is hard to believe that just a few hundred years ago women were being burned at the stake for their ‘devilish’ behaviour, and it is only in recent years women have had the freedom go out alone and have fun.

How times have changed, and nowadays our inner ‘devil’ is not only recognised, but it is being revered and given a space of its own, outside of the home.

The ‘man shed’ is yesterday’s news, and we are now seeing a rise in the ‘she shed’, where we can hang out, chill out and even pass out if we want to.

We have been hearing for ever about man’s need to have time out with his tools and tinkering and even stashes of vodka or whatever his poison happens to be. But it is equally important for us girls to have our own ‘hang out’ to explore what is important to us.

I was particularly excited to see that ‘she sheds’ come in all colours, shapes and sizes and are catering to every taste.

For instance, if you love pink and are a bit of a princess there is a gorgeous pink shed that ticks all the boxes – or if you prefer a gothic stance, and tend to walk on the dark side, there are also sheds available for you.

You could have it sound proofed for instance and install a recording studio to play with some beats if you are a secret rock chick, or build a cocktail bar and play Sex and the City with your friends.

I have just put in my order and am talking to my inner Kardashian as I am indulging in cupids and the more ornate look with a bit of Marilyn glam thrown in with a fabulous fifties print at Central Station in New York.

What I love about this is that it is completely my own space to do what I like in and with, away from the demands of everyday life and even my nearest and dearest if I want to escape.

Well, I also have the freedom to welcome who I want into my ‘she shed’ and believe me any visitors will be carefully selected. So anyone that does get an invitation should feel very special, and prepared for a lot of devilish fun.
