DEE ANDERSON’S MAKEUP BAG – LOOK ME IN THE EYELINER AND SAY THAT

DEE ANDERSON’S MAKEUP BAG – LOOK ME IN THE EYELINER AND SAY THAT

Reading Time: 4 minutes

That is what it says on my makeup bag which was a present from a friend, and I mean it.

Whats in my makeup bag?

I concentrate on my eyes, because they were the inspiration behind a very famous television character, Lady Penelope.  You would think I would shout it from the rooftops but when you are constantly told something by your mother when growing you tend to take it for granted.

As I get older, I do realise the significance of it, and as Sylvia Anderson (mum) was a pioneer of women in television and was indeed the creator and visionary for the iconic female Secret Agent, I am beginning to appreciate the accolade and share it around.

The face and bone structure of the puppet was based on my mother, but the shape and colour of the eyes were influenced by mine as a child.

Also, as Dr Aamar Khan, skin and cosmetic guru of Harley Street Skin Clinic said, my eyes are my ‘Centrepiece’.  How lovely to hear that from such an expert, and of course I must now emphasise them even more.

It is always important to mois

Foundation

Mac Mineralize Moisture Spf15 Foundation

I begin with a light moisturising foundation Mac Mineralize Moisture Spf15 Foundation which I apply all over my face and neck, including the eyes.

Blusher

dusky vintage rose pink blusher

A dusky vintage rose pink. Takes me back when I used to raid my grandmother’s dressing table, and try on her rouge.  It has a similar scent too, delicious.

 Eyeshadow

Benefit, they’re Real! Big sexy eye kit

Then I use Benefit, they’re Real!  Big sexy eye kit with their smoky range of colours from beyond nude to bombshell brown.

Eyeliner

Rimmel exaggerate eyeliner

Rimmel exaggerate eyeliner is my absolute fave.  You may think I have downgraded from my more exclusive options, but believe me this is smooth and slick and stays on for hours.

Volume Mascara

Dr Huuschka Volume Mascara

Dr Huuschka Volume Mascara is super creamy and thick and you really don’t need false eyelashes if you apply two or three times, allowing the mascara to dry in between applications.

Lipstick

luscious red lipstick

If you are feeling sexy and dangerous, then La Voix is a great luscious red lipstick, and can be obtained from the website of the same name.   I tend to wear it at night but tone down my look during the day with a paler tone, using Clinique, chubby stick – 02 whole lotta honey.

Mushroom and Pea Risotto with Parmigiano-Reggiano

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This Risotto is a great family favourite I always cook for my wife and four girls.  Yes I am completely outnumbered – but this is such a winner and keeps me in their good books for at least a day.!!

Try it for your loved ones and make sure you add the Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese – it really enhances the flavour and makes it a bit special.

GOING MAD TO STAY SANE – THE POWER OF THE MIND

GOING MAD TO STAY SANE – THE POWER OF THE MIND

Reading Time: 3 minutes

How many of us are really holding it together in these crazy unprecedented times.   It really is the wild west with the unpredictability of the Pandemic and life as we know it.

How do we survive and come out of this without permanent damage to our already fragile mental wellbeing.

These are the questions that are being posed on every level to psychologists and we are desperately seeking answers.

Andy White

A highly accomplished psycho therapist call Andy White has a theory of his own through tried and tested means and has written a book ‘Going Mad to Stay Sane’, which talks about how to turn ‘sanity’ on its head by staring fear in the face to overcome it.  How our self-destructive urges become our salvation. Patients in his care have experienced life changing outcomes in times of high anxiety and depression.

Another revolutionary phenomenon are The Speakmans, a highly successful husband and wife team whose revolutionary therapies have taken the World by storm, with unparalleled outcomes for those suffering with fears or phobias.

Nik & Eva Speakman

Nik and Eva Speakman have appeared recently on daytime TV to announce that Dutch scientists have validated their treatment method and claim it to be more effective that those recommended by the NHS or World Health Organisation.

How critical in these burning times of fear as our mental health issues soar out of control with overwhelming feelings
of doubt and desperation.

We are turning to mindfulness as our only solution in these terrifying times, and are seeking solutions far beyond our comprehension or that modern medicine can provide.

To experience The Speakmans in conversation with the Wonderbirds log onto the WonderbirdsShow. The show is
being aired on Friday 17 April or you can see it in catch up on the Wonderbirds Facebook page.

Nail Polish for Men is “Normal” — Just Like It Used to Be 5,000 Years Ago

Nail Polish for Men is “Normal” — Just Like It Used to Be 5,000 Years Ago

Reading Time: 6 minutes

As the lockdown persists, we see more and more men emerging with painted nails, either through choice or the reluctant endurance of their creative offspring.

When Jaden Smith posed for Vogue Korea, the internet went berserk. According to Entertainment Tonight, he looked “stunning shirtless in a skirt with a flower in his hair.”

What made headlines was the skirt — not the blue nail polish on his fingers.

Smith is hardly alone. Plenty of other men have been seen wearing nail polish, including Johnny Depp, Seal, Brad Pitt, Zac Efron, Harry Styles and more.

But History is actually repeating itself. Men have been wearing nail polish since 3,200 B.C. After an excavation of royal tombs at Ur of the Chaldees in southern Babylonia, it was discovered that most men during that time wore nail polish, with different colours signifying different classes. Made primarily with kohl, the darker the colour, the higher the class of the man, from warriors to leaders. Lighter colours were reserved for the lower class men. Prior to battle, the warriors would take hours to paint their nails,so really, it’s not a new thing at all. In fact, nail polish for guys used to be the norm.

Come forward to artists such as Iggy Pop, Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed and David Bowie, all of whom painted their nails.

All the men above were rock stars, rebelling against the gender norms their elders obeyed. In Bowie’s case, critics just didn’t know what to do with his androgynous look, since rockers of the past had been forced into being extremely hyper-masculine figures.

But something has shifted in the past few years, not only by stars like Jaden Smith, but also the emergence of nail polish brands catering toward men.

There are several companies specifically producing these nail polishes just for men, an internet search will bring up a few makes, in reality they are no different to normal nail polish, they just stick to earthy and darker shades.

Though there is no reason not to go for a more bolder shade like Harry Styles of One Direction seen here with red polish on some nails.

Our very own resident chef Adam put it to the test for us, His daughters painted his nails, in black, and they went to town shopping. “At first I was very apprehensive” said Adam, “but after being in a few shops and paying for goods, knowing full well that my painted nails were in full view I suddenly became more and more confident, no one batted an eye lid, it certainly seems it is now acceptable for guys to wear nail polish”

Creator of Thunderbirds, Sylvia Anderson was always pushing the boundaries on fashion in all the shows she created & produced, even some of male characters on Thunderbirds wore eye shadow.

But that was Sylvia, given her fashion background, always trying to push just a little bit more and it certainly contributed to what made all the shows a success.

We will leave the last words to Adam. “I may try this again, and will report back. However I will stick to darker colours as don’t think a bright pink will go down well at the pub on a Friday night with the lads, but if pink is good enough for Prince Harry then you never know!”
