Ramsgate International Film Festival – A Sleepy Town Comes to Life

Ramsgate International Film Festival – A Sleepy Town Comes to Life

Who would have predicted that a sleepy seaside town situated on our low key Kent coast, would burst into life and host an international film festival, the likes of Cannes and California would be proud to present.

In these extraordinary times, the first Ramsgate Film Festival is taking place on 24-26 March –an equally amazing lady, Sylvie Bolioli is at the helm.

Sylvie was brought up in Menton in the South of France, and fell in love with Ramsgate after studying in the UK at Nottingham University and living and working in London, as it reminded her in so many ways of her home town with the friendliness of the people and as she discovered other like-minded creatives in the area.

Sylvie is half French and half Italian, and started acting as a child when she belonged to a Youth Theatre group called ‘Le Jeune Theatre du Soleil’ which toured in the South of France.

Sylvie has a genuine passion for film, which is evident as she has worked both as an actress and a director, even directing the legendary Scorsese in a clip to be shown at the Oscars.

Sylvie also directed a short film called ‘GAS’, based on a story by Alfred  Hitchcock written in 1919 before he became a film director and  licensed by the Hitchcock Estate, with Johanna Mohs, Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) and Valerie Leon (Bond, Hammer, Carry On).

She is a big Hitchcock fan and loves the Hollywood film noir of the 40s and 50s and Hollywood 40s and 50s in general.

She then made a feature documentary called “Law & Disorder: the Insanity Defense’ about the criminal responsibility of the mentally ill.

It takes bravery to face your own demons and that is what Sylvie has done in the making of this film, as she too has suffered with depression in the past, as have so many artistic people throughout history.  It is this very component or strength that has enabled her to pioneer such a groundbreaking event as The Ramsgate Film and Television Festival.

Another reason for Sylvie moving to Ramsgate, was to own a dog, and he is the Festival’s mascot. Sylvie says ‘I am an animal lover. I have a dog  and a cat. I also try to rescue animals and I looked after birds. Not always easy to save them when they’re injured or fallen from the nest.  But I do my best’.

Sylvie has recently acted in a film called ‘Leave Now’ by Stephen Frost, entirely  shot in the area of Ramsgate. It will open the Festival, but not be part of the competition.

As film makers and artists are booking their flights and tickets from all over the globe to attend the festival, we spoke to a colleague of Sylvie PR guru Ricky Barnett, who is blown away by her passion for the event, and predicts that it will be the first of many film festivals to be held in Ramsgate, and that next year will see even more famous filmsmakers and faces.

Check out the itinerary already available, we will see you there.

Name Change and Systems Go For The Caravan Club

Historic club renames as Caravan and Motorhome Club to inspire new generations to adventure

The Caravan Club today becomes the Caravan and Motorhome Club to inspire new generations to experience the adventure of travel in the great outdoors.

The 110 year old membership organisation represents more than one million caravanners, motorhomers and trailer tent owners across the UK. Members have access to a network of caravan and motorhome sites and tours around the world.

Grenville Chamberlain, chairman of the newly renamed Caravan and Motorhome Club announced the news at the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show in Birmingham today saying: “This is an exciting and historic moment for our Club. While the heart of our community remains the same, our new name reflects how our membership has changed and grown. We will focus on developing pioneering new ideas and services which share our expertise, inspire and welcome everyone to the freedom of exploring and enjoying adventures in the great outdoors. That’s why we are also upgrading facilities across our entire site network including wifi on every single site by the end of this year and expanding our worldwide travel options.”

Harvey Alexander Caravan and Motorhome Club director of marketing confirmed: “Our community has been passionately sharing its collective knowledge of touring holidays for 110 years and we want everyone who loves the outdoors to feel welcome to join our community. Our million members are as varied as the landscapes we explore – from early risers to star gazers, walkers, wild swimmers and surfers to families or groups of friends reconnecting together away from the confines of home and work. We already offer service and facilities for whichever way our members chose to travel by caravan, motorhome or trailer tent and our new name reflects the fact that four out of ten new members are now motorhome owners. We know that members’ outfits, hobbies and interests are becoming more varied so we will be working doubly hard to reflect, support and highlight those opportunities and to open people’s eyes to the possibilities of the adventures available by caravan and motorhome.”

The announcement of the new name for the Caravan and Motorhome Club was celebrated with the launch of a report which revealed predictions that more than 16 million caravan, motorhome and camping trips will be made next year – the highest since 2006.

In the next five years the number of trips taken will increase by 400,000 according the Caravan and Motorhome Club Inspiring Adventure Report. The Club is also expecting the number of caravans and motorhomes in the UK to rise from 755,000 in circulation today to top more than 800,000 for the first time by 2022.

The report also identified that people are drawn to the idea of a caravan or motorhome holiday because of the freedom to do their own thing (45%), the sense of adventure (38%), the flexibility to change plans as they travel (28%), to set an itinerary to suit their timeframes (20%) to stay in really rural locations, to be close to places they love like beach or mountains and as a more affordable holiday option (19%) to get closer to nature and because they just love being outdoors and waking up to fresh air (18%). People also said a holiday by motorhome or caravan appealed because it made it easy to travel with groups of friends or camp in comfort at festivals (8%) or to follow sporting passions such as surfing, golfing and skiing (4%).

Harvey Alexander added: “Our vision is also to make our members’ experience easier so they can get on with enjoying the great outdoors and evolve to meet the needs of our members today and for future generations. Our new Caravan and Motorhome Club logo has been designed as a tribute to our original membership badge, but with intertwined letters to represent both caravan and motorhome members.”

Catwalk at the Oscars

Catwalk at the Oscars

The Academy Awards, or “Oscars”, is an annual American awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to pay homage to the best productions to emerge out of the United States movie industry.

The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, which has become commonly known by its nickname “Oscar.” The awards, first presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, are overseen by AMPAS.

The awards ceremony was first broadcast to radio in 1930 and televised for first time in 1953. It is now seen live in more than 200 countries and can be streamed live online. The Oscars is the oldest entertainment awards ceremony; its equivalents, the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music and recording, are modeled after the Academy Awards.

Well, this is how it is described on Wikipedia – but reading between the lines as we celebrate the 89th Oscar award ceremony this year, there are a lot more layers to the ceremony which have emerged over the past decades.

Top designers have seized an opportunity to present their most valued creations before an international audience desperate to emulate the Hollywood elite.

So let’s look back at some of the fashions that have donned the red carpet and the stars they have adorned.
