The Stars Came Out For The Pink FAB Ball

The Stars Came Out For The Pink FAB Ball

The very first Pink FAB Ball took place on Friday 6 May at The Landmark Hotel, and a host of famous faces adorned the occasion.

The Pink FAB Ball, which was in association with Breast Cancer Care, was also in honour of the recent passing of Sylvia Anderson, co-creator of Thunderbirds and Lady Penelope.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster from Game of Thrones and Maze Runner, and who incidentally is playing the character of John Tracy in the remake of Thunderbirds for ITV was just one of the stars who were there.

Representatives from ITV itself arrived to honour the occasion – and followers of the shows over decades from the Fan Club, Fanderson arrived in full regalia.

The characters from The Andersons’ shows mingled amongst the guests and posed for photographs as they arrived for the pre-champagne reception in the gorgeous Gazebo at the Landmark Hotel.

The event was compered by the incredible Barry Cryer who wrote a moving tribute poem to his friend Sylvia, and an up and coming opera singer Olivia Slatter who had just turned 18 – watch this space for more updates.

The charismatic Leighton Jones from The Voice, and he really does have an amazing one, as he performed with his partner Kate – getting the room up on their feet to dance the night away.

Cass Lewis from Skunk Anansie purchased an iconic puppet at the auction, and there were a host of amazing prizes which had been donated by Pinewood Studios, Abbey Road, Sir Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop, and an incredible Voice Over from Lewis Macleod, voice of Postman Pat who sold two prizes to enthusiastic guests – with all proceeds going to The Andersons’ favourite Charity, Breast Cancer Care.

The Heart and Soul of Leighton Jones

The Heart and Soul of Leighton Jones

Leighton Jones is one of those rare performers who as Boy George said recently on The Voice – has ‘a voice that melts snow’.

I had the privilege of speaking to him last week as he will be performing for us at The Pink FAB Ball for Breast Cancer Care, which will now also be in memory of my Mother, the legendary Sylvia Anderson of Thunderbirds and Lady Penelope fame.

Leighton was both down to earth and enthusiastic as he told me how passionate he was about performing to raise money for Breast Cancer Care, having suffered a rare form of cancer himself as a child.

Leighton had a bet with his 15 year old son that if he got into the Cardiff Rugby under 16s, he would apply to appear on The Voice. Leighton knew his son would be successful and the rest is history.

Leighton was a full time musician himself before auditioning for The Voice and was snapped up immediately following his incredible first performance – and went on to appear in the finals.

He had already established himself as a musician and performer as he learnt both piano and guitar through his own self tuition, and had already been a support act for Bob Dylan, as well as writing with Pino Palladino of The Who before auditioning for The Voice.

When you listen to Leighton, it touches a part of you that is rare in these days of automated music. To say he is an old soul is almost a cliche, as he is a modern day legend with a talent and depth that can move you well as rock your world.

I am as excited about seeing Leighton Jones perform live as I would any living legend, and equally delighted to be meeting him, and thrilled that he will be on stage at our very special event The Pink FAB Ball.

Rock, Frock Or Gown – A Mega Dilemma

Rock, Frock Or Gown – A Mega Dilemma

Why has an invitation to the Red Carpet event of the year The Pink FAB Ball at the Landmark Hotel on 6 May sent me into a lather?   My old boyfriend’s ‘there ain’t no pleasing you’ comment spring to mind, as I agonise upon what to wear ever since I heard the news.

It really is going to be a memorable occasion, firstly because it is in association with an important Charity, Breast Cancer Care who bring solace to so many sufferers of the disease, and secondly it is now in memory of the First Lady of Sci-fi, our very own co-founder of Glotime.tv Sylvia Anderson. Even more reason why I need to get it right.

As a five foot two and a half curvy, from the Bridget Jones generation where she got it embarrassingly wrong when invited to the Lawyers Ball, do I really want to make an idiot of myself turning up in the wrong gear, let alone over doing it with too much makeup.

I have been through all types of looks in my imagination, from an extravagant ballgown on hire from a Wedding shop, to a badly fitting evening dress which I have decided against, and am now almost settling on a tuxedo mans style evening suit a la Princess Diana from the eighties. So I have decided to use the agony of the past few weeks and impart a bit of wisdom to you for any special occasion.

The key is to identify your own unique style and go with it, even if you have to wear a leather jacket over a ballgown or a pair of your favourite strides with a dressy jacket.

So use your own wardrobe is the first place to start. Get out your favourite items of clothing and footwear and build the outfit from there. Then take yourself off to the nearest vintage outlet with the said item, and hunt for treasure. It can be in the form of an old chocker or pendant or even a brooch. Any piece of jewellery to make the outfit unique to you, the scroll the internet for shoes or boots or whatever is missing to complete. It is amazing how creative you can become when focused on a project of this nature, and incredible how the Universe will present you with exactly what you are looking for when you are on a mission of this importance.

Whatever the outcome, and after all the weeks of agony, the most important thing is that you feel good on the night, as well as feeling confident in the outfit you are wearing. Which is where I am coming to now to recommend those ladies of a certain age and stature who can still rock it, and want to look and feel good. Go with your gut and what makes you feel like you want to dance as if no-one is looking because if you do you are sure to raise an eyebrow or two from the less adventurous and a glance of approval from those you really want to impress.
