To Spay or Not to Spay – Milly Comes of Age

To Spay or Not to Spay – Milly Comes of Age

I would firstly like to thank all of you who have been following the Adventures of my Golden Labrador Milly, and your cards and messages from you lovely pet owners.

Well, here is the next episode and it may help with some valuable information which can affect your pet’s health or for you to pass on to friends or family facing the same dilemma.

I am a great supporter of my local Rescue Home but was offered Milly eight months ago from a litter of Labrador puppies looking for a home.

Having recently moved out of London, I was looking forward to being a dog owner once again, and even though I had carefully planned Milly’s arrival and had taken advice on food, health and safety – was completely miffed by the extent of my ‘ignorance’ in certain areas of doggie care and decisions I had to make.

I am fortunate that our offices are welcoming of pets, as long as they are ‘well behaved’ and not too noisy, and so no problem there. Although I have found some excellent dog walkers and a wonderful doggy day care centre, that Milly absolutely adores. I sometimes wonder if she misses me at all as she bounds out of the car to join her furry friends. They have heated kennels for when they have their ‘rest’ at lunch time, and a ‘one to one’ with all of their pets. Absolutely fantastic! It is a question of trial and error, and you have to look around and listen to other pet owners – a bit like choosing a school for your child, and is a really personal choice.

So all has been going smoothly and Milly at six months old was turning the corner of her boisterous puppyhood and growing into a wonderful friendly sweet tempered animal, who has become a real ‘mate’ as I snuggled up with in front of the fire at night.

But there was one concern that had been at the back of my mind, and then suddenly became centre stage, ‘when do I get her spayed?).

If you are the owner of a female dog, and definitely do not want her to have puppies, you will be facing the same decision.

I had advice from the breeder to say that I should wait until she has had her first season before arranging a neutering three months later in between the next one.

I was then advised by the local veterinary assistant that I should have her spayed at six months. I booked the appointment, only to meet another dog breeder by chance the next day on a walk who once again advised me to wait until she had her first heat, and that it could be anything up to a year before it happened. Because having her spayed at six months could lead to serious health consequences, as her bone growth could be affected!

I cancelled the appointment at the vet straight away with a rap across the knuckles from the veterinary nurse – making me feel like a naughty schoolgirl, but still felt I had made the right decision.

One month later Milly came into season very early, and although I had been warned about the mess, the awkwardness of her behaviour and the general upheaval – believe me it is nothing compared to the outcome of a dog whose growth has been interrupted or who has health problems in later life.

Even the doggie day centre takes in dogs in season, but just keep them away from other males, and so my life was hardly disrupted at all and I feel at ease with my decision, and that really in the end as with any ‘parenting’ it is down to the individual to make the right decision for their offspring and their life.

More adventures of Milly coming up shortly.

The Power Of Love – Secrets From The Man Cave

The Power Of Love – Secrets From The Man Cave

Sexual attraction is a very powerful tool, which has been the downfall or the building of empires throughout history, dating back to when time began, with the forbidden apple of Adam and Eve.

In recent times, it has been attributed to young women in their ‘prime’, with the more visual allure of physical beauty and aesthetics.

But the truth is out and the power of sex is not just a young man or woman’s attribute, and is not a thing endowed on the beautiful or the rich and famous, as our modern tabloids lead us to believe.

A well-known psycho-analyst who prefers to remain anonymous as he is writing a book on the subject, refers to this widely covered phenomenon and confesses that as a secret from the man cave, it is a myth invented by men to ‘control’ women. He states that when the source of this safely guarded secret is revealed he could be lynched by men for all eternity.

He went on to tell us that his best relationship was with a woman twenty years his senior, and three times his weight. He also upholds the challenge from males and females alike in the wake of this revelation, saying that it is across the board for men in general.

So how quickly are we to believe this ‘new man’, or this liberating revelation? How nice would it be if we didn’t feel intimidated after the age of 30 to be young and slim and have long legs and big boobs and perfect skin.

We have studied this expose and tapped my own research bank to trash the myth and help our sisters to find their sexuality whatever age or shape or beauty.

Take our Prince Charles with the much maligned Camilla for instance. If you had put her up against Diana as a candidate for sexuality and love with our popular belief system, who would you have chosen?

That is just one example. I have another with a friend who is well into her fifties, overweight and not conventionally beautiful, but is a steaming hot bed of sexuality, who has men dropping at her feet, let alone in and out of her bedroom.

How many times do you look at couples who don’t add up to the belief system, with the male partner being ‘better looking’ than the lady, but are deliriously happy and enjoying good sex. It can work the other way round too, but that is another discussion.

It may be that it is too much to take on a lifetime of cover up and discover that we have been duped in one hit. But imagine for a moment it were true. It may be that you have issues relating to age related body image, or have always been ashamed of the way you look.

It could also be that you are aiming for perfection, and we all know that all models are airbrushed these days, so perfection is impossible. But it does not stop us endlessly aiming to drop a dress size or turn the clock back. Nothing wrong with looking good or keeping fit and healthy, but unrealistic goals are not good for morale or long term confidence and body image.

The Goddess of love and sexuality will be celebrating with us as we speak, as these secrets are revealed, and feel she has guided us to this discovery to confirm that our ‘man spy’ could be well on course.

Beauty Is Far More Than Skin Deep

Beauty Is Far More Than Skin Deep

Car mirrors and magnifying glasses should definitely be banned I vowed as I caught sight of my rather tired looking skin this morning.

There have been a number of family visits over Christmas, a short new year’s resolution to lose weight in January with a two day starvation diet, and a string of lunches and dinners accompanied by wine and coffee with friends.

It is no wonder my skin is suffering from wear and tear, as was evident when I dropped the kids off at school this morning as I glanced into the mirror as I was sitting in the driver’s seat.

Talking of being in the driving seat, we really are as we can definitely do something about it. I always remember the famous Body Shop mogul Anita Roddick saying to me in an interview that as long as you hydrated, your skin would look good.

So we can begin with drinking more water. I am the first to admit that my coffee and tea consumption over the winter months has exceeded my water intake, and I am about to take myself in hand on that one.

I have now stocked up on bottled water, as although tap water is good, I can always taste the chlorine and so prefer Evian or Fiji, the latter being my favourite and being stocked in Waitrose or you can order online.

Drinking several glasses of water a day will visibly improve your skin within a few days, and is an excellent way to start.

You could also improve your skin cleansing technique by taking an extra 2—3 minutes a day to make sure the surface is squeaky clean and leave your makeup off for as long as possible, even if only half an hour.

Skin creams are in abundance, but you have to find the one that suits you best. You could go for the Rolls Royce of skin creams, Crème de la Mer which is great for every skin type, and even clears up Eczema – being originally created by Dr Huber with the sea kelp as its main ingredient as a healing property .   Visit the website http://www.cremedelamer.co.uk/ for a special Valentine offer or throughout the year where they justify the investment with extras that make it worthwhile. A good size pot with perks around £150.

If your budget is still fragile at this time of the year you could go for a more affordable line with Clinique 3 step for £20. This is an excellent skincare kit and will get you in the zone for a full on revamp of your skincare regime.

Last reminder is to exfoliate, some say twice a week, I personally feel once weekly is sufficient to help sustain a glowing skin – and gets rid of any excess of makeup or open pores through exposure to the elements.

It really is what suits you best – shop around there are some great offers out there and it is sometimes good to kick off with a facial which sets you on the road to youthful looking skin.

Do all of the above and you will enjoy those car journeys and the unexpected glimpse of your younger self in the wing mirror.
